Bring a plate?

Christmas Tree Cookies‘Tis the season to party… especially for my kids.  Over the next few weeks my kids have a busier social diary than I do.  Everything from a Kinder Christmas concert to Grandparent’s day at school to a school break-up party. Each invitation ends with “Please bring a plate”.

The first thoughts that pop in to my head are “What can I make that is quick and easy?”, “I need a recipe that is tried and true”… and “How can I impress the other mothers?”

 In the past I’ve made:

Christmas Tree cookies
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • ½ cup icing sugar mixture
  • 200g butter, chopped
  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • Green food colouring
  • Mini M & Ms

Blend flour, icing sugar and butter in the food processor, until it resembles breadcrumbs.  Add 2 tablespoons water and mix.  Place on baking paper and refrigerate for about 10 minutes.  Roll out to 1cm and cut out using a Christmas tree cutter.  Place on trays and cook in oven at 180C for 12 minutes.

Make icing with icing sugar, green food colour & 2 ½ teaspoons of water.

Once the cookies are cool, dip them in the icing and place on a wire rack.  Decorate each cookie with the M&Ms and leave to set.

 Mars Bars slice
  • 3 cups rice bubbles
  • 3 Mars Bars
  • 3 oz butter
  • White chocolate buttons

Melt Mars Bars & butter in a saucepan. Pour mixture over the rice bubbles.  Pour into a slice container and refrigerate. Melt the chocolate buttons in the microwave and drizzle over the slice.  Cut into bite size pieces.

What are your recipe ideas so I can knock the socks off  not only the kids but also their parents?

Hi Merryn, love your Christmas Tree Cookie recipe! My kids are inspired – definitely something we can make together and share with friends as part of our Christmas gifts. Thanks for sharing. Btw, not related to Christmas, can you share your Golden Syrup Dumpling specialty recipe? It’s got our taste buds going :-) Thx.

Hi Minibabybel, I’m very happy to share the cookie recipe. It is so easy and my kids love them. By the way, the Christmas Tree Cookies went down like a treat on Grandparents day at school. The plate came back empty. That is always a good sign.

Mmm Golden Syrup Dumplings are an old favourite in our family. My parents are coming over for roast night tonight, so I might just treat them with a batch. The Golden Syrup Dumpling recipe is one that was in my Mum’s school cookbook, that I’ve adapted slightly. I’ll post the recipe in the next couple of days. I can e-mail you the recipe if you’d like to cook them tonight. Let me know.
