The Chocolate War Has Begun
“It all started so innocently. “
For those that follow us on Twitter, you may have seen rampant discussion about white chocolate. Some background will be needed to fully understand where this fervent discussion rose from.
Over a few weeks, some general chat amongst vocal groups centered around one side enjoying some white chocolate. This side, which has since named themselves “Team All Chocolate”, is led by Sarah and Cate.
This angered some just-as-vocal groups in the twitterverse. Most loud amongst them and first to head into the breach were Kerri and Kylie (Team Real Chocolate). Their simple claim is thus: White chocolate is not chocolate. No harm was being done, just some minor discussion and the old thumbing of one’s nose in the other’s direction.
The debate continued, and I observed from a safe distance. It was not long however before I was pulled into the middle of the argument. See, to many people on twitter, my existence is merely a means to send free chocolate out to everyone. It was inevitable that if a number of our followers were discussing chocolate in any capacity, I would be asked to give free chocolate at some stage by someone.
Examining the arguments, there is an obvious objective viewpoint for the Team Real Chocolate – in the form of cocoa content and make up in the ingredients. The arguments are equally as strong for “Team All Chocolate” in the subjective sense. That is where my interest was piqued – could we find a consensus amongst us?
I have since sent all four ring leaders a ‘research pack’ containing resources to cement their understanding of their side of the argument (read: I sent them free chocolate). All four ladies have agreed to assemble their arguments and present them on the Coles Online blog on Friday, August 6th for the final public debate.
And then – things got serious. Propaganda. Snide remarks. Campaigning. Recruitment.
ABC Radio has also contributed coverage of the conflict, with the irrepressible integrity of Carol Duncan from 1233 Newcastle moderating an on air discussion between two of the group leaders – which you can listen to right here (it is highly entertaining and I recommend it).
Like any war, the aroused feelings evoke artistic inspiration – and thanks to Thea for assigning an anthem to the conflict that will pass on the message to future generations so that they can learn from these dangerous times.
Eagerly I await August 6th, 2010 – The day the Chocolate Wars assemble on the field of battle.

White chocolate is just icky. Too simple.
I totally agree! White chocolate is too sweet. AND white chocolate is not chocolate as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Give me dark chocolate, can’t even eat milk chocolate.
But I think Australian legislation differs. All will be revealed though in the arguments presented on August 6th.
But isn’t Cadbury Dream real white chocolate???
The only good white chocolate is Green & Blacks.
Can’t agree more! but their milk choc and butterscotch is even better!
Coles Finest White Chocolate is a ripper as is the Darrel Lea one – not sweet at all.
Oh go on – just give me chocolate…..
I agree with Linda, the only decent white chocolate (which is not real chocolate) is Green & Blacks.
I’m a Milky bar Kid
It’s all chocolate. You must learn to live with this fact of life.
White chocolate is chocolate. I’d still prefer a vodka martini to chocolate, though.
White chocolate is just so wrong. I prefer dark chocolate, but milk chocolate is ok too.
Ever tasted German Rittersport or Sprengel, Milk and Dark, you won,t eat Australien Choc anymore
