Fast Food At Home: Japanese Yakitori Chicken
I’ve typically bought Yakitori chicken kebabs as a quick lunch when I’m out shopping from Japanese food court outlets. Yakitori are Japanese style chicken kebabs. My daughter and I whipped up these kebabs for a simple Friday night dinner. They are so easy to eat they would also be ideal for barbeques and parties.
What you’ll need for the chicken:
- 6 Chicken thighs
- Spring onions (408419)
- Chinese five spices (318531)
Yakitori Sauce:
- 2/3 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 5 teaspoon sake (At coles online search for this item ”5364784″)
- 1 Tablespoon plain flour
1. To make the sauce, stir the soy sauce, sugar and sake or wine into the flour in a small pan and bring to the boil, stirring. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, until the sauce is reduced by a third and set aside.

2. Cut each chicken thigh into six chunks and cut the spring onions into 3cm pieces.

3. Thread the chicken and spring onions alternatively on to 12 bamboo skewers.
4. Brush the chicken with the sauce. Cook on the barbecue or in a fry pan, brushing generously several times with the sauce. Cook for about 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked but still moist. Serve with a little extra sauce and sprinkle with five spice.

I stir fried a mix of broccoli, carrot and cauliflower and cooked up some rice to accompany the kebabs.
