Super dooper super foods

May 18, 2012 2 comments

Have you ever heard the term ‘super foods’ and are wondering what it is? What are super foods? Are super foods really super and why? The term is used a lot lately and it is basically a food that has a string of amazing nutrient properties. We all want extra vitamins and nutrients in our diet and eating a super food can help pack a vitamin punch quicker. With winter looming, good nutrition is even more important for fighting off viruses. There are many super foods out there but let’s learn a little more about three of them; Chia, Quinoa and Blueberries.

Chia

Adored by ancient South American civilizations for its powers of strength, chia (pronounced Chee-ah) has been grown for use as  food and medicine for thousands of years. Chia seeds have 6 times more calcium than milk, 7 times more vitamin c than oranges, 3 times more iron than spinach, a great source of vitamin B and so many more great properties. This little seed is perfect for vegans and those on strict diets as it provides many essential nutrients. There are many ways to enjoy the benefits of Chia seed but the easiest way is to sprinkle it on your cereal or on your yoghurt.

You can find Chia in the following healthy products:

Arnott’s Vita-Weat Lunch Slices Oat, Sunflower and Chia (Search 8607270)

Be Natural Four Bars Coconut Apricot & Chia (Search 7901465)

White Chia Seeds (Search 8671101)

Quinoa

Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wah) is an ancient South American seed that was highly favoured by the ancient Incas who believed it was sacred. It is high in amino acids, antioxidants, insoluble dietary fibre, contains magnesium, protein and is a good source of plant derived calcium. Quinoa is beautiful in salads. Try a delicious Roast Vegetable and Quinoa Salad, you can find the recipe and add the ingredients to your cart at Coles online by searching “Roast Vegetable & Quinoa Salad”.

You can find Quinoa in these products:

Orgran Supergrains Cereal O’s Multigrain Quinoa (Search 7484040)

Helgas Bread Wholegrain with Quinoa & Flaxseed (Search 7875445)

Coles Organic White Grain Quinoa (Search 8668195)

Blueberries

Blueberries contain a high amount of antioxidants which fight free radicals in the body. Antioxidants can improve skin quality and make you feel happy. A diet high in antioxidants may reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease and certain cancers. Eating blueberries straight from the punnet is the best however they are only available seasonally.

You can find blueberries in these products:

Creative Gourmet Frozen Blueberries (Search 5164399)

Organic Bubs 6 Months Baby Food Blueberry, Banana & Quinoa Pouch (Search 7574289)  – A great little meal for baby and it also contains quinoa as mentioned above!

Norganic Crunchola Bar Apple Blueberry (Search 9291252)

Dairy Farmers Thick N Creamy 98% Fat Free Yoghurt Blueberry (Search 8878653)

There are lots of other highly nutritious foods that could be classed as super foods such as salmon, grapefruit, goji berries, oats and ginger just to name a few.

How do you like to get extra nutrients in your diet?

5 Things Not To Buy Mum For Mother’s Day.

May 4, 2012 4 comments

We love our mums no matter what kind of quirks they have. Right? They cared for us, cleaned our clothes, fed us, bought us treats (only on occasions), let us play with friends and make messy mud pies, fed us well, encouraged us to aim for the stars, paid for our ballet lessons and put up with our teenage mood swings, crazy hair dye jobs and boyfriends they may not have approved of (you’ve totally moved on to greener pastures now haven’t you)?

You probably should get your mother something that she will like and will make her feel special this mother’s day shouldn’t you? Yes you should. (This is your mother speaking)

Here are some things we recommend that you DON’T buy from Coles online for your mum this mother’s day. Read more…
